Bringing Hope to East Rukum
Women’s and Children’s Ministries in Action

The Women’s and Children’s Ministries Departments of the Nepal Section, led by Shanti Pokharel, visited the far western region, specifically East Rukum, from December 1 to 7, 2024.
Due to its geographical location, this area is remote, and many residents live in poverty, lacking basic human needs.
The worldview of the population is largely influenced by superstitions and connected to the religious practices of their ancestors. People lead simple lives without much hope or expectation. Nature is revered, and deities and idols play a significant role in daily life. Despite their hardships, the community engages in various festivals and events.
The climate is cold, and the land consists of steppes that are not fertile. Residents can typically harvest only one crop per year and heavily depend on livestock for food. There are no medical facilities available in the East Rukum village, so residents often suffer from untreated diseases and may die from minor illnesses due to ignorance of health issues.
While there are primary government schools, very few children attend because of poverty. Many young children help their parents in the fields and care for animals or their siblings at home. School dropout rates are high; boys often start working at the age of 13.
Social problems, such as child marriage, divorce, alcohol and substance abuse, fighting, and gambling, are common in the community. Amid this darkness, God had a plan to bring hope to the people. Two decades ago, a message of hope reached this area, leading to the growth of Christianity and the establishment of Adventist churches. Currently, there are two Adventist churches in the area, with about two dozen believers who maintain their faith and serve as witnesses to their community.
The leadership of the Nepal Section, especially the Women’s and Children’s Ministries and Ministerial departments, visits this area twice a year. They spend time with these precious people, listening to their pain, sorrow, and joy, while teaching them essential skills such as literacy, hygiene, and women’s health.
The Women’s Ministries Department conducted Bible studies and meetings for women, gathering children to teach them about cleanliness, Bible reading, and faithfulness. The children learned songs and received Bibles. All the women received warm clothing (shawls, woolen caps, and socks), and special meals were provided for everyone in the community.
This mission serves as a reminder that we are Christ’s hands in bringing healing and hope to those in need. By supporting families in East Rukum and beyond, the church continues to fulfill its mission of sharing Christ’s love and building His kingdom—one life at a time in Nepal.
